On June 28 2007, the Young Women's Empowerment Group was honored to host Dr. Patricia Hill Collins as a guest speaker for our inaugural group session at CentroNia. Dr. Collins kindly shared the afternoon with us, touching on a range of themes from racism and reclamation to varieties of feminism, with a number of her own personal experiences intertwined. She quickly put our group at ease with her kindness, humor and genuine interest in the personal histories and opinions of the young women present. Before departing, she left a signed copy of her landmark book, Black Feminist Thought with the group. The book will be the first in a new section of the Family Literacy Resource Library dedicated to books with feminist and social justice themes.
